Xibo Player Malfunction after Update and Installation on Ubuntu 24

Dear Support Xibo,

I would like to inform you about an issue that has arisen following the recent update of our Xibo CMS and the installation of the player on an Ubuntu 24 system.

Actions Taken:

  1. CMS Update:
  • I have updated the Xibo CMS platform to the latest version. The update was completed without any apparent issues, and the CMS appears to be fully operational.
  1. Player Installation:
  • I installed the Xibo player on a machine running Ubuntu 24. The installation process went smoothly, and the initial configuration of the player was successfully completed.
  1. Configuration and Connection:
  • The player was activated on the CMS side, and the connection to the CMS was confirmed via the player interface.

  • The player successfully loads the scheduled content from the CMS.

Issue Encountered:

  • Once the player starts executing the scheduled content, the screen turns gray, and the content does not display as expected.

  • The “Xibo” logo briefly appears at startup, but then the screen goes gray with no further display.

Tests and Checks Performed:

  • Reinstallation of the Player: I attempted to reinstall the player to ensure that no files were corrupted during the installation, but the problem persists.

  • Log Inspection: I reviewed the logs from both the CMS and the player, but I did not find any significant errors or warnings that might explain the issue.

  • Connectivity: The connection between the CMS and the player is stable and confirmed. The player correctly downloads content from the CMS.

Hypotheses and Request for Support:

  • It is possible that there is an incompatibility or a specific bug related to Ubuntu 24 or the new CMS version.

  • I am requesting your assistance in diagnosing this issue. Are there any specific configurations needed for Ubuntu 24 or additional dependencies to install?

  • Any advice or further troubleshooting procedures would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your support. Please feel free to contact me if you require more information or additional technical details.

Best regards,

Id check the usual suspects, video codecs, gstreamer etc. gpu drivers if applicable

Can you get the content files to play on this hardware outside of xibo?

Xibo 1.8 (or whichever snap has) works fine on Ubuntu 22.04.xx and 20.04.xx. A new player for Linux will be released in Q1 or Q2 most likely of 2025

Thank you for your response. All these aspects have already been checked, including the usual suspects such as video codecs, GStreamer, GPU drivers, and the external directory outside of the snap.

I will now attempt to modify the versions of Ubuntu and Xibo. I will keep you updated.

Best regards,
Jacky

I received this ticket: Thank you for your interest in using Xibo for Linux.
The available Linux version, ‘linux 1.8-R6-108,’ is too outdated and therefore not compatible with the current CMS.
At present, our development team is still working on an update for this player, and we hope to release it soon.

I think you want to keep an eye on this thread

They are already working on a newer version of Xibo for the current Ubuntu. There are a number of us waiting for this to be released. If you read through the thread you’ll see it ‘should’ be any day now. But no specific timeline has been given.

Hi, Jon_Knowles

Thank you for your valuable help. I followed your advice, I uninstalled and reinstalled everything the way you advised me to do and it works. Thank you very much. You are a champion. Jacky
