Translation "widget"

Hi,

I’d like to get your opinion about a translation issue:

Now I am before the task of translating a bunch of lines for version 3, I run into a matter I have for some time, and that is the translation of the word “Widget” In Dutch. There is no 1:1 translation, so far I left it unchanged. But for non-ICT users it is a little strange word. I consider changing it in “Module”

In your documentation you have a chapter “Modules” and then you talk about Widgets, Why not call them Modules too ? I also considered the term “Elements”

My question is: If I start talking about Modules instead of Widgets is there any chance I get confusion now or in the future ?

Kind regards,

Jules

Hi Jules,

The Modules section of Xibo is only ever intended to be used by system administrators and power users. A module is the technical and administrative function which sits behind a Widget. Today they are always one to one, but that might not always be the case.

The English definition of a widget is:

an application, or a component of an interface, that enables a user to perform a function or access a service.

It seems to me that widget is most commonly used in the smartphone world, but its also used in windows/mac in various places. Quite a common term as far as I can see.

For dutch, I’ve seen that mostly translations leave it alone - i.e.:

My smartphone’s display shows several widgets.
Het display van mijn smartphone toont een aantal widgets.

I hope this is helpful to you!

Thanks,
Dan
