Hi The_Custodian, welcome to the community!

Amazon recently released their dedicated Amazon signage devices, which are recommended to be used instead of the Fire TV device.

I’m aware others have used the FireTV devices in the past with mixed results. The usual method for installing the player is to save it to a USB stick, connect that to your FireTV device and then use a File Browser app on the device to select the APK so it is installed. Have you tried that method?

The error you mention is from the FireTV device itself, so you may need to contact Amazon for support with that error if the method I described above is not working.

Thanks Daniel,

The Firestick in question is older and does not have a USB port. I was able to use a Downloader app to retrieve the file from xibosignage. We are hoping to roll out 35 of them to use as clocks and announcement signage in our school.

I am able to secure 35 Firesticks, similar to what we are testing for proof of concept, for $22CDN/ea. Amazon has the EZ-AD TV Digital Signage Player, and the OptiSigns Android Stick Digital Signage Player, both for well over $100.

Amazon has made it clear that it does not support “unknown software”.

I will let the team know. We may have to go back to the drawing board.

This is probably outside your domain, but I do have a suggestion. Since the Android Client is a paid Xibo license, would it not be reasonable for Xibo to put it on the Android App site? That would make for ease of download, eliminate the "unknown software " error, ease of install and advertise Xibo’s products.

Thanks for your input.

Hi Paul. Thank you for your detailed follow up and for sharing that Amazon have said that the Firestick does not support unknown software. It’s very possible this is due to their dedicated signage stick being recently released.

This is a question we have been asked before, however there are issues with the terms that mean that we cannot offer the Xibo for Android player through the Play Store. My apologues for any inconvenience that causes you.

Finding suitable hardware at a price-point like the one you mention may be tricky. Low cost Android TV devices are sometimes used by our customers but the performance can be inconsistent. You may find some advice in the Hardware Channel on the community forum. We do have our own comparison chart for Android hardware however I suspect the hardware suggestions are likely to be higher than your original budget.

I hope you find a hardware solution that meets all of your requirements.

Thanks Daniel,

I appreciate the input. I agree, Amazon has a vested interest in promoting their own signage stick.

I also realize that the App Stores generally have rigorous requirements to protect themselves and their users. Still, it may be useful to revisit those requirements periodically - you never know!
