RTSP stream freezes then resumes playing at higher fps

Hello,

we are having issues with the xibo android player when it’s playing rtsp streams it freezes intermittently for about 5-6 seconds then resumes but playing the video at a much higher rate of speed.

it will then freeze again when it catches up with the rtsp stream and do this continuously, we are thinking about implementing this in our company but are unsure if this is due to the way the rtsp stream is being run or to do with the xibo android app or the android box itself

Setup info:
Running off a dual quad core xeon server with 16gb of ram, 256gb ssd.
rtsp stream is being created by vlc with a capture card thats taking in a tv signal from an hd box.

android box is a himedia q3 quad core.

EDIT:
i should mention i’ve gotten it to stop this by going into the settings menu when it freezes and then going back out and it seems to resolve the issue until the device is rebooted or the stream reloads.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance!

Hi,

This device is not on our recommended devices list, although that does not necessary means it’s bad or explains this behaviour.

Could you please tell us
a) What Xibo for Android version do you use?
b) More tech details about your stream?
c) Did you experience similar behaviour with normal videos or is it affecting only streams?

Hi thanks for the quick reply!

android version: Xibo 1.7 r59

the stream itself is being generated from vlc’s streaming function to create an rtsp feed and is being encoded to MPEG4 by vlc.
Buffering is set to 2200ms although this never seems to affect the stream itself.

i’ve tried a few local videos that are streamed from xibo itself and they seem to work fine they just play a little bit below their normal fps but don’t freeze.

Please disregard this, i replaced the player with another model and the issues seem to be resolved.

hmm so it seems it was hardware related, you could also try updating the firmware on your ‘old’ device perhaps they fixed some problems.

Anyway, I am glad that it’s working fine for you on a new device
