Recommended Updated Android Player Hardware for 4k Usage

We are looking to purchase new Android players for massive 4k DS usage . Who can recommend a good and reliable updated model/`brand touse?

The DSCS9X Android players are really amazing for Xibo, but these have reached end of life.

Looking at the DSDevices website, they have announced the DSDA1 and DSDX5 players. Both players have the following:

  • Android 14
  • Xibo Pre-installed (separate licence required)
  • TeamViewer Pre-installed (separate licence required)
  • HDMI 2.1 With 3D, HDR, CEC and 4Kx2K@60fps max resolution

More can be found on https://dsdevices.com/

Keep in mind that Xibo automatically resizes all media to a width of 1920 pixels. Luckily you can change this in Settings → Defaults → Resize Threshold.

Additionally you might want to change your layout to be using a 4K resolution. Xibo should have this option by default. In case this doesn’t exist, you can create this on the Resolutions page, then edit your Layout to use this new resolution.

Personal thoughts but I’m a bit biased on this one.

We had bought several of these players in the past and when they reached end of life/support they were not reusable for other purposes.

They were ok, don’t get me wrong, but I’m also thinking on the function after and not to have e-waste.
Even just as common media player for people at home.

I’m wondering how people experience Nvidia SHIELD devices?
They are strong enough to push 4K content, support CEC, HDMI2.0(b), regular proven updates and sort or less equally expensive for the non-pro version. Plus they can be used afterwards to give to people as a media player.

We’re working on certifying new devices, which is an ongoing activity. Our media players are all listed here: Digital Signage Media Players | Xibo Recommended Hardware. Requests for new devices to be certified can go here: https://xibosignage.com/media-player-hardware-requests (with some of the existing requests shown at the bottom).

That’s a good point, and one we’re very conscious of. It is a difficult balance between a commercial grade device with limited second use but great security, vs a consumer grade device with second use potential but poor security.

We see the balance more towards commercial grade and security, with a view to getting a long life as a signage device.

There is probably some confusion here - they are not end of life or end of support. Xibo will still support any installations on these devices, and they are perfectly good and stable devices for use in production. If one breaks, you’ll have to replace it with something different, but that’s the only consideration.

We’re having good luck using the ONN 4k Pro Google TV boxes. It was a bit of a PITA to get them into portrait mode (the box doesn’t support it natively) but we solved it pretty quick with ADB TV.

We have some Amino H200 in to test with our 4K TV.
Previously we had Intel Compute sticks on those displays and they worked in 4k beautifully (really crisp PDF files displayed).
I’m having trouble getting the same result with the Amino devices. The players say they see the TV resolution as 4k (in their menu) so it seems to be a client issue. In the status screen of the client it indicates 1920x1080.

Does anyone have any suggestions? We are running the 408 player version.

Have you reached out to Xibo or Amino support? While the android UI is 1080, both video and web (the pdf) content should be native 4k

Hi Dan,

I tried to raise a case with Amino but they instantly closed it each time. Even though I purchased a player and cloud management subscription, I can’t log a support case.
Xibo might want to talk to them about this as it’s a terrible customer experience and if you’re now pushing it as a recommended player option, it’s not great.

I will open a Xibo case now.

Thanks

Thanks for your feedback, I will speak with Amino about it.

When you raise a ticket with Xibo, please mention that you have spoken with me here. I expect we will ask for your PDF if you wanted to provide that ahead of time.

Thanks Dan,

Great, I’ll connect up with our support team. I’ve also raised this with Amino too and they are going to try and assist. Sorry for the disconnect and thanks again for giving the feedback here.

Hi @damiencalvert .. I’m sorry you have had this experience and understand your frustration. We have reviewed the case and found that an incorrect configuration on our website and support portal enabled you to log a ticket against a support queue for registered customers and as your address was not recognise by the system, it automatically closed the ticket. We have immediately resolved this to avoid recurrences of the issue and customers are able to receive support by clicking Digital Signage Support in the menu of our Support Portal. Our support team will contact you directly to ensure that there is no further delay. We pride ourselves on our customer support and while we may sometimes make mistakes, we will always rectify them.
