Giada DN83 - RSS feed scroll up jerky

Hi!

I have a Giada DN83 with custom firmware installed in a test setup. According to the device comparison (Xibo Device Feature Support - Google Drive) it should work with the core widgets. I configured a layout with a RSS feed that is scrolling up. Although the feed data is retrieved and the layout itself seems correct, the scroll effect is really jerky.

Also, during playback, the player comes up with an Android message “Xibo is not responding” and I can wait or close the app.

Maybe the device has not enough power for the scrolling feed, but I don’t know and did not find anymore information about it.

I am using Xibo R411 and Giada DN83 firmware image DN83-T-GIADALOGO-20260519.img, which I got via Giada support directly.

If someone has some more information about it, please let me know.

Regards,

Holger

The team has been working on this one and we think that it is solved in our next release (R412) which we are currently finishing up.

Marquee scrolling is surprisingly intensive on the web engine / media player. We do make improvements to that periodically, but they are served from the CMS, so you need to ensure your CMS is update to date to take advantage.

Ah ok, then I will have to wait for Release R412.

Regarding the jerky scrolling I can say that the server is really up to date (Docker based, last image pull yesterday). Additionally, I am testing two different players (Windows-based GMKtec media box and Amino H200), which both do not have any problems with the scrolling - over the same network via the same WAN connection as the DN83. So I expect it to be a load problem with the hardware. That would be sad as the DN83 is a really cost efficient player, but if it is not capable of playing the normal stuff, I have to think about if it makes any sense to use it overall.

Thanks for the extra context – the H200 will be using exactly the same scrolling rendering as the DN83, so your theory is likely correct.

I’ll report an issue for us to investigate and see if we can improve.

@dan Many thanks for the information. We will keep our one DN83 test player to see if your improvements in R412 have a positive impact on our decision to get more of them.

Besides the jerky scrolling on the DN83 which is clearly a performance issue, I have to add an additional observation on Android based devices - we now have a few Aminos and some Windows players side by side - there is a (text) content dependent, very slight amount of up and down jumping of the scrolling text as a whole on Android devices - no Windows player shows this effect. For me it is more of a container positioning or sizing issue than a performance problem. I don’t know to describe it better and how the player is actually rendering stuff, but it is a bit like a flex web element containing the scrolling text which is being slightly resized or positionally reset or something like that. It is not that obvious on a small screen, but if you have some bigger scrolling text block on a 95’’ screen it has a noticeable effect.

@dan

Does that device integration work on the Giada DN74, or is it Giada DN83-only? And is the newer DN84 certified or planned?

Or are these questions only Giada can answer?

Also, is there a list of certified Android devices anywhere, showing which release added each?

Thank you very much

This is the best overview I know of, provided by Xibo itself:

Yeah, I saw that and thanks for sending it .

Just have DN83 for Giada products on that file, so I can’t really tell if using DN74 or even DN84 (newest model) will accepts same features
