Hello,
I’ve read the email and suspect it’s an effect of the Cyber Resilience Act.
What do you decide? Will it be ChromeOS or the SoC versions of the display manufacturers? I’m unsure and would like to save myself a lot of investment, research and testing.
I use the displays very often in portrait format, and this is not possible with all solutions together with Xibo as far as I have been able to calculate so far.
How do you feel about this? Do you already have plans if you have previously used the Android Player DSCS… also because of the quick installation option, including Teamviewer?
The decision is not directly related to the CRA (Cyber Resilience Act) which does not come into full effect until December 2027. Xibo (the software and the company) will comply with the CRA where appropriate when it comes into full effect. We will also work with our recommended OEMs and hardware partners to ensure that we do what is needed to help them with compliance.
All of the devices we support currently (SoCs, DSDevices, ChromeOS) support portrait orientation.
are there any practical recommendations for successors?
Yes! (or rather there much clearer guidance very soon)
We will be building out recommendations for hardware based on use cases, requirements and countries in due course. We are open to feedback on potential partnerships should you have hardware in mind.
Personally, I think the partnership with DSDevice fell through, probably due to a disagreement.
However, it’s not nice to leave your customers/users and especially partners without a backup solution.
I’ve been selling DSDevice Android boxes to my customers for 4-5 years (+500 qty), and now I don’t know what to tell them.
The DSDA1 is still not available.
DSDevice has played its cards very badly; you don’t take a product off the market until its successor is ready.
There wasn’t any disagreement, just difficulties in getting a replacement device to a level where we thought it was something we could recommend to you. DSDevices are still working on it and I hope it will come to market soon.
The Amino H200W is a fantastic alternative to the DSCS9X and Xibo is fully supported on that device. It also has a full remote management solution you can optionally add, which would replace TeamViewer/etc.
We will be updating our media player hardware page as we add more partnerships:
As a customer who purchased that hardware you should have received a series of emails keeping you up to date and giving information about replacements as it became available. Sorry if you did not receive them.
If you haven’t already done so I would encourage you to contact Amino sales and have a discussion. It’s a great device and they have a good team who are keen to help. They can also assist with distribution in the EU and US.
We have several ChromeOS deployments (with an updated player app release coming soon too). It is currently difficult to get stock of the recommended devices and we are exploring alternatives there too. You’ll need Google Admin Console and a Kiosk & Signage upgrade licence, unless your device comes with one (which many do).
We have not been able to certify the DSDevices DSDA1 yet, but we’re open to doing that once they have a device ready. You’ll be able to buy directly from DS Devices.
In short, since we no longer have the DSCS9X and DSCS95, we (reseller/integrator) have no suitable solution to offer our customers who have incompatible screens.
Purchasing hardware outside the EU and reselling it is not an option for us, as experience has shown that there are many bureaucratic hurdles (keywords: WEEE, recycling, de facto manufacturers), not to mention the difficult/expensive return options in the event of defects.
It is a great pity that things have developed this way.
