DSCS95 and DSCS9X Retirement - are there any practical recommendations for successors?

Hello,

We decided to switch to Xibo because of the hardware available in Europe. Procuring hardware outside of Europe is not an option for us.

Please add the hardware back to your product range after certification.

Reboot is available via Amazon’s console/app, and they have assured us that other missing features (such as screenshot) will be back filled in due course.

What specifically is it about the Amino recommendation that is difficult for you? Pricing? Availability? It would be really useful for us to understand the details here so that we can improve.

Absolutely understand both of these points - EU distribution is an essential part of the process and it should be the seller who solves this not the purchaser. We are looking for hardware partners who have solved this, ideally globally, which is one of the reasons we have Amino on our list.

DSDevices may choose to have better distribution themselves in the future, they haven’t confirmed that with us. We also haven’t received any devices from them for testing.

We will continue to work with new/existing hardware partners to improve choice and distribution for recommended devices. For example we are testing a new device from Giada. We will also be ready to work with Amazon as they make improvements to their device capability.

If you see a device you’d like us to consider, please let us know: https://xibosignage.com/media-player-hardware-requests.

Primarily the price.

The only one European retailer (at Netherland) offers the H200 (2GB RAM, 8GB ROM, which is not enough) for €226 excluding VAT (205€ with 250 qty).

I would need the H200W (for the 4G RAM, 32G ROM and Wi-Fi embeded), but given the price of the H200, I didn’t ask for the price of the H200W..

Previously, our customers had a slim fanless Android player box with 4GB RAM and 32GB ROM around €150. DSDevices were very reliable and durable.

Now, at that price (under €200), there is nothing reliable left.

I will receive the DA1 tomorrow, and I will be able to test its reliability, but even this one has increased significantly in price.

Thank you for the honest feedback, much appreciated and the challenge is understood. We will continue to work on it.

If you decide to settle on the new DSDA1 or DSDX5, please be aware that we have not been able to certify those devices yet. The last samples we received were missing things like remote APK upgrade, screenshot with video, HDMI-CEC, etc.

Thanks for your reply.

I’ve received today DSDX5 and DSDA1. I’ll try it before sales it…

@dan Is there any news regarding certification?

@ProServ How are your tests going?

We’ve been testing a DSDX5 and it runs well so far, the only issues we’ve discovered are with taking a screenshot with video (for troubleshooting). However, the device comes rooted which is not a security posture we can certify on a new device. We’re in communication with DSDevices to see if they will produce a secure firmware, and we will keep you informed.

I’m a little surprised, since the DSCS95 were rooted too?

You’re right, they were rooted, as was the standard when they were released. However this isn’t the standard any longer and we have a responsibility to ensure we’re making recommendations inline with the best practices.

I’ve been in contact with DSDevices, and they are still working on their non-rooted firmware. We will of course provide an update when there is more information.

I’ve started my testing, but I’m stuck at the step where I’m installing the DroidVNC_NG app for remote access.

Here is the conversation with DSdevices

I’m having a problem installing an app (DroidVNC).

The app can’t get accessibility rights. The option automatically turns off when I turn it on.

Please download https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/dev.zwander.installwithoptions/

Install your app using install with options.

We have been working with DroidVNC_NG for another client and found the Screen Capturing didn’t AutoStart on reboot.

We solved the issue by using MacroDroid.

However, I tested the Xibo app, and it works well, except that the screenshot feature isn’t working, as Dan mentioned.

Unfortunately, I haven’t tested everything yet—PDF, DataSet, webpage, etc.

Just to note to say that the v4 R410 release made today has a change for the DSDA1 so that it uses root to perform privileged actions (such as remote upgrade).

Obviously we still can’t certify it while its using root, but for those of you using it anyway, it should be a little better.

@dan @ProServ Thank you for your feedback and information!

Dan’s suggestion from another thread is also quite interesting:

I’ve ordered a test model. As soon as I’ve had a chance to try it out, I’ll share my thoughts. I find the option to install a 3G/4G module particularly interesting.

Hi @CraftedInSteel

Where did you buy it, and how much did it cost?

Giada has a good overview of her sales partners here: https://www.giadatech.com/Distributors

We chose CONCEPT International GmbH, who also have a price list directly online: https://www.concept.biz/Pricelist.pdf

(Unfortunately, the search function in the PDF is currently not working on mobile phones, so I can only link to the price list)

The price is higher than the DSDevices, but I’m mainly interested in the 3G/4G functionality.
