Tick means it’s up to date.
Cross (X) means it’s downloading content currently
Exclaimation mark (!) means new content is ready to be downloaded, but the Player hasn’t attempted to download it yet.
If you mouse over the icon, there’s a tool tip to explain.
It’s also covered in the manual in the Display Settings -> Status section:
