Adding image in image placeholder problem

Dear community, first time posting here!

I’ve installed a layout from the download section in order to make my first display content. Problem is that when I try to add an image in the section that is named “image placeholder” the image won’t load in that section. It was one of the “hotel and amenities…” layouts. They look fine, but as stated I’m unable to attach my own images (or any image, there are none shown in the layout template after installation).
Any tips on helping this noob out?

Thanks in advance, kind regards JdM

Hi JdM, welcome to the community!

Before we troubleshoot this issue, please can you make sure that your CMS is running the latest version (4.2.3 at the time of writing this message), as there are some known issues with the placeholder not allowing images to be added in older CMS releases.

I downloaded the layout named Hotel services amenities with images 001 to test with. if you can check the name of the layout you downloaded (it should state the name in the top left corner of the layout editor), I would be happy to download the same layout as you so I can test the same one as you.

I will talk you through the steps I took to add an image to the placeholder in the layout I’m testing with:

1. Open the layout in the editor.

After I have imported the layout on the Layouts page of my CMS, I click the button at the end of the entry for the layout and choose Design. That will open the layout in the editor. You need to choose Checkout so that you can make changes to the layout.

2. Add an image to a placeholder.

I choose the Image tab on the right hand side of the editor. From here, I can choose the upload image button, or I can use an image already uploaded to my media library. I will do the latter for this test. I search for the image I want, then I click on its tile:

You can see in the above screenshot that:

  • The image I clicked on in the Image tab is highlighted.
  • The image placeholders in the layout have changed to an orange/red colour, which mean they are ready to be selected. I click on the box/placeholder above where it says Complimentary Wi-Fi.

You can see that after I clicked on one of the coloured boxes, the image is added:

3. Publish the changes

I click the burger menu button in the top right of the editor and choose Publish. You must publish all changes you make to ensure they are finalised in your layout.

How does this compare to your experience? If you follow the same steps, what do you see?

Hello DanBW,

Thank you for your detailed reply.
I can confirm having CMS 4.2.3 at this point. I can also confirm that you have chosen the right layout.

My problem is as follows regarding to the steps mentioned:
In step 2. add image to placeholder, I am experiencing another view in the GUI.
On the lefthand side I am only seeing my uploaded items/items belonging to the layout, but in your screenshot I can see an image next to the “upload image” button. See my questionmark in the screen image.
In my case this means I can’t highlight the lefthand images, I can only choose the “add bakckground image” on the right side which, unfortunately/obviously, changes the total background image and not the image in the desired placeholder.
When I click the desired placeholder first, at that point I cannot select an image anymore, the righthand side editor for the placeholder doesn’t have the option to select an image.
Could you see if I’m making any mistakes in the procedure you’re suggesting?

When the image placeholder is selected, there is no add image option on the right side (but I haven’t seen that option in your screenshots either, I’m only showing this as a reference)

I’ve tried to drag and drop, that doesn’t work either unfortunately.

Thanks for the screenshots JdM.

What if you click the + button next to one of the images in the list on the left, then click on one of the placeholder boxes in the layout when they turn red/pink? Does that add the image?

Hello DanBW,

While opening the GUI to try adding with the + as mentioned (which I’d already tried, but I’ve learned to not be too stubborn  ) I am seeing a different GUI now.
This is pretty strange, because I dind’t change anything in the settings or the program.
Anyway, at this point the layout is different and the + next to the images is gone. The GUI now looks the same as your screenshots and they also work the same. That means adding the images works fine now, just as you’ve shown in the first place.

I’m flabbergasted.

Thanks for coming back and updating this post.

I must admit I’m not entirely sure how/why your GUI would change, so I’m also flabbergasted by this. Nonetheless I welcome the change as it sounds like your setup is now in line with mine and you can add images to the layout/placeholder.

I’m glad we made it and the issue is now resolved. Hopefully if any other users find themselves in the same situation, they will also find that following the steps will clear this behaviour for them too.

All the best with your setup JdM. I hope you can continue getting used to Xibo now without any further issues

Thank you and thank you for your help. If the day comes where I would have an epiphany on the subject, I will be glad to come back and announce it here.
For now I will be working on the layout setup.
