1.7.8 Player stays black or no window at all after update

Below is my experience after updating the CMS to 1.7.8 and 30 days later also updating the Player to 1.7.8.
Maybe it can be useful to someone with a similar problem.

I first updated the CMS a moth ago leaving the Client running on Player 1.7.4.
This worked perfectly until last week, when I updated the Client to 1.7.8.

The player was running(taskbar icon only, but no black screen, no window, nothing), files were being downloaded, but not displayed.
For diagnostic purposes I tried the following:

  • Set up the Screensaver version =>
Inside the Screen Save Settings window I could see my campaign running just fine, but it wouldn’t preview full screen, or run normally.

Tried also this on a Win7Pro VM:

  • Working Xibo 1.7.4 client
  • Installed 1.7.6 over 1.7.4 => Invalid Configuration Option from CMS [PreventSleep], my CMS is version 1.7.8, but I do get a black screen.
  • Installed 1.7.7 over 1.7.6 => Invalid Configuration Option from CMS [PreventSleep], my CMS is version 1.7.8, but I do get a black screen.
  • Installed 1.7.8 over 1.7.7 => Settings are now saving, and I get black screen but the Xibo SPLASH is not showing.
  • Set a custom SPLASH image => UI Thread|28/08/2016 13:45:01|Error|ShowSplashScreen|Unable to load user splash screen => custom SPLASH also not not showing.

Tried it on Win10Pro => same problem.

After “clean” installing the 10/07 bug fix for the 1.7.8 player I still had this problem.
So I decided to do a clean CMS install for testing, and that did the trick.
After changing the player config to the test CMS they all (WES7, Win7 and Win10) immediately started to work.
I’m not sure what went wrong updating the CMS, the 1.7.4 player had worked fine for a moth after that.

Now copying all my lay-outs to the working CMS, and running fine again.

That’s to be expected it was added in the later CMS/client version, so you need 1.7.8 player and CMS

Other errors/issues are less expected

After CMS upgrade, if something does not feel right, first thing to do would be ‘verify all’ on Modules page.
There probably also were some logs in CMS / player status screen that could explain what has happened.

In any case, I’m glad it is working with fresh CMS installation, hopefully you don’t have too many layouts to export/import.
