Updates to layout causes it to freeze

Hi,

We have started to notice when we send an update or layout to our android devices that the layout will freeze, where we then have to restart the device, once rebooted the layout plays fine.
We have the latest android app and all licences, along will latest cms version.

The devices are mygica quad core 16gb devices – plenty of power.
The layouts are simple based on images only, 6-8 items

Any insights appreciated.

Do you know the speed of the processor and also what graphics processor the units have? Also how much memory do you have. How are the devices powered, USB of another device or DC adapters? Do they all experience the exactly same problem and freeze in the same spots on the layout? How large are the images you are using?

In addition to that - when you say “freeze” do you mean that:

  • the application becomes unresponsive
  • the application closes
  • the whole device becomes unresponsive
  • the application / device are responsive, but the layout doesn’t advance

Good Morning,

Currently 5 Devices:

4 x MyGica 582:
Quad core
1GB Ram
8GB false
USB
HDMI, 4K Ultra HD
Bluetooth
Android 4.4 – Kitkat
Powered by direct connection to 110v outlet.

1 x MyGica ATV380
Quad Core
1GB Ram
8GB Falsh
USB
HDMI, 4K Ultra HD
Bluetooth
Android 4.4 – Kitkat
Powered by direct connection to 110v outlet.

Average size of the images: 75kb (the master is a powerpoint presentation saved as images). This particular layout has 8 slides

My network is powered by cisco switches and all switches are on UPS’s, I thought their might have been a “hiccup” in the network, but then also unplugged the network cable and it still did not respond.

It occurred on both models. We changed the very first slide of a presentation yesterday, and I noticed when I was walking by that it was “stuck” on a frame. To be honest, i just rebooted as that’s what fixed the problem, I did not test if it was just the XIBO client.

It seems to do this when something is changed on the layout after the initial upload/scheduling. When I sent up the initial layout last week, it played no problems… We had to change “slide 1” with a new image and that’s when I notice the freezing…

I have one box that I did not reboot yet as the display is turned off and it’s not in use until September. I will check it to see if it’s working or also stuck on the layout. Dan has requested this information also, I will post the answers on his thread/questions.

Thank you,
Peter

Well given what I can think of, my suspect would be the firmware of the device. However, I could be completely wrong on this.

Are there any other apps running on the device?

Hi,

No, nothing. It’s sole purpose is for xibo, I’ve actually removed all unneeded apps.

I’ll try to do an update to the layout and see if it freezes to check if the box/OS is also frozen or just the layout

Thank you
Peter

Was thinking about this a bit. Does Xibo have root/SuperUser access on the Client?

Sorry for the delay - I am still not clear what you mean by “freezes”, can you indicate which of the 4 options it is actually doing?

I think that means we are looking at: the application / device are responsive, but the layout doesn’t advance.

We have had that problem from time to time and in all cases is has been advancing, but there has been an image stuck on the “front most” position.

Would you be able to say how often that is happening? I wonder if there is something particular to your images that would help us recreate the issue.

Hi Dan,

It looks like the layout does not continue or move to the next slide when an update is pushed out. Let me test more thoroughly if it freezes again, that way I can pin-point if its the box or xibo client

Thank you,
Peter

Hello,

We had the boxes “freeze” again yesterday, I was able to access them for testing and determine what is “freezing”:

What I found was that the actual android box is responsive. It appears to be the xibo client that is frozen/stalled. I was able to “return” from the xibo client back to the main screen, started the app again, and the app was operational again.

Layouts are nothing big, 11 slides at most, simple text, maybe an image on a few slides.

Thank you,
Peter

Sorry, I didn’t see this message.

I think you are experiencing a problem which we have managed to resolve fully in a version that will be released next week. I will PM you a link to get a pre-release.

Hi Dan,
Excellent news, thanks
