How secure your Xibo setup is will depend on how it has been configured.
If you have enabled SSL then all communication between your Player and CMS will be encrypted. The XMR Push Messaging service also encrypts all communications.

Yes SSL security is a must, if it has SSL then the connection is fully secure. Since I work at a web security agency we make sure that our clients have end to end encryption implemented. it is our first line of defence in web security.
