Is support for closed captioning available in any way currently or on the road map to be implemented at some point?

By any chance are you embedding YouTube videos? If so, How To Force Subtitles In An Embedded YouTube Video may help.

Currently we are uploading video as media and playing with the built-in media player.

It doesn’t look to me like the Video module really supports that, but you could look into using an Embedded module and one of these plugins to show an HTML5 video with a caption file you provide.
