Xibo Player loses CMS configuration

Hey everyone,

New to Xibo and have installed it on multiple machines across a couple of campuses now, but every now and then I get this fellow popping up on a random display and I’m not sure what may be causing it.

Essentially, my Xibo Player on a random machine and at a given time won’t connect to the CMS any more; and if I launch the settings to check what’s going on with it, it looks like it’s never been configured!

Further to that, my usual fix is to delete the display from the CMS and reconfigure it from scratch; but this time it won’t let me delete the display. I followed the steps and have a troubleshoot.zip file, but not sure where to upload it…

Can anyone shed some light on what I might be doing wrong? (Or point me to a thread that has already covered it, I can’t seem to master the search function here).

Thanks for your time in advance,

Hamish

Thank you for the information and screenshot. Can you confirm the following:

  • What version of the Xibo for Windows Player are you using?
  • When logging into the Windows PC are you receiving any messages that you are logged into a temporary profile?
  • Have any changes been made to the system prior to the issue occurring?

Can you also confirm if the configuration files for your Player are empty? To find the hardwarekey file, go to the Local Library location stated in the screenshot you have provided and look for a file named hardwarekey. You can open this file using Notepad. When opened, does it contain any data?

If you go to C:/Users/The_user_that_Xibo_is_installed_under/Appdata/Roaming you should see a file or files named Xibo and/or XiboClient. If you open these files using Notepad, do they contain the CMS address and Secret key? Please note that you may need to set Windows to show hidden files in your Control Panel (under Appearance and Personalization) to be able to see the Appdata folder.

Many Thanks.

  • What version of the Xibo for Windows Player are you using?
    10.8.10.0
  • When logging into the Windows PC are you receiving any messages that you are logged into a temporary profile?
No, it’s signing in to the Standard user account fine.
  • Have any changes been made to the system prior to the issue occurring?
    No, none.

Would this potentially happen if there was weak wi-fi?

Can you also confirm if the configuration files for your Player are empty? To find the hardwarekey file, go to the Local Library location stated in the screenshot you have provided and look for a file named hardwarekey. You can open this file using Notepad. When opened, does it contain any data? No, the hardwarekey file is empty.

If you open these files using Notepad, do they contain the CMS address and Secret key? Please note that you may need to set Windows to show hidden files in your Control Panel (under Appearance and Personalization) to be able to see the Appdata folder. This file (XiboClient) has the ServerKey and ServerUri fields populated with the correct information.

For your reference, here is the error I get when I try to delete from the CMS;

Thanks so much for your help with this

I popped the hardware key from the CMS into the hardwarekey file and it immediately downloaded the latest schedule and looks perfectly healthy inside the status-window on the Windows player.

However, on the CMS it’s showing the following on the Displays page (note the X on Logged In and XMR Registered)

And when I try to send a command I get an error. (This Player is not configured or ready to receive push commands over XMR. Please contact your administrator.)

I hope that helps!

Thank you for answering my questions and providing screenshots. The fact that the hardwarekey file was empty is very unusual, is it possible that anyone may have inadvertently removed this data or modified the file? As you have found, entering the Hardware Key resolves the issue. If you find this happens again, please make notes of any changes to the Player, as this may help to understand how this file came to be empty.

According to the screenshot and messages you are receiving, XMR appears not to be registered or configured. If you click the down facing arrow at the end of the Displays row, choose Edit from the menu that appears. this will open the Edit Display window. Select the Advanced tab and tick the box named Reconfigure XMR. When you click save at the bottom of the page, this will begin the reconfiguration. After a couple of minutes, click the refresh button on the Displays page in the top right corner. If XMR Registered has not changed to a tick, please let me know.

The screenshot you provided of the error while trying to delete the Display could be related to a bug. Can you confirm if any tags have been added to the Display? If they have, try removing those tags before deleting the Display. I understand that you may not wish to do this currently as the Display is working, however I would recommend making a note of this for the future.

Many Thanks.

Hey Dan, thanks again for your help. I’ve tried doing the ‘Reconfigure XMR’ option and I get this error;

I don’t believe any tags have been added to the display, the tags field in the edit menu has nothing populated in it either. It smells like a bug, any advice?

Yours,

Hamish

According to your previous screenshot, it appears that XMR is registered for your other displays. I would recommend checking the Display Profile that the Player is using has the Public XMR address entered correctly.

Can you again confirm the version of the Windows Player you are using? If you are using version 1.8.10.0, I would recommend upgrading the Player to the latest version (1.8.10-132) to see if the issue is resolved.

Many Thanks.

Heya Dan,

There wasn’t a display profile set, it was just using the “default” settings. Would that be a reason the issue occurred in the first place?

I downloaded the player from the Xibo home-page and it just wanted to do a repair, so I assume I had the most recent install. However, I removed the app and re-installed and now everything has bounced back into action again.

I don’t know if I’ll still get the error if I delete the display, but I’m not sure I want to incase I can’t get it back again :stuck_out_tongue:

The initial issue of losing the settings has happened on another screen as well, would it have anything to do with a weak wi-fi signal getting in the way during a transfer or a check-in?

Yours,

Hamish
